Marie Kondo Sparks Joy for Young Readers with Her New Children's Book, Kiki & Jax

It's never too early to learn the KonMari method.

  • Tidying Up star Marie Kondo officially released her first children's book, Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship, on November 5.
  • The 40-page book was created in collaboration with award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Salina Yoon.
  • Kondo hopes that young readers enjoy the message of always valuing friendship.

Marie Kondo has had a whirlwind year, but 2019 had one more project in store. The organizing expert has set out to spark joy for young readers with her new children’s book, Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship, which is out now. The 35-year-old teamed up with award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Salina Yoon to tell a story about how tidying up can even bring friends closer together.

“My hope is that the story of friendship in Kiki & Jax will not only inspire kids to tidy, but also help families discover its transformational magic,” Kondo said in a behind-the-scenes video. “I love this book and its message to always value friendship. Nothing sparks more joy than a friend!”

The children’s book centers around two best friends who couldn’t be more different: While Jax, the owl, enjoys organization, Kiki, the squirrel, is a bit of a hoarder. Although the two have a lot of fun together, Kiki’s ever-growing collection starts to become overwhelming and together they must find a way to make room for what truly sparks joy: their relationship.

Throughout the 40-page book, Yoon hid items that spark joy for Kondo's two daughters. Young readers can try to find a ukulele, a donkey, polka dot sunglasses, a rainbow bag, among other treasures. “I’ve always felt a deep connection to Marie,” the author and illustrator shared. “We were completely aligned on the message we wanted to share with families; it’s a rare thing when a book writes itself, and Kiki & Jax was that kind of story.”

If you happen to breeze through Kiki & Jax, you can catch up on all the news about Kondo's upcoming book because, of course, there's always more tidying up to do. Get ready to practice the KonMari method in your workspace with the help of Joy at Work, coming spring 2020.
